When your eyes don't make enough tears or your tears evaporate too quickly, this is referred to as dry eye.
It is more prevalent in women and in people aged over 65. This is because with age, the eyelids are not as effective in spreading tears across the eyes during blinking.
You may be suffering from dry eye, if you feel like you have gritty eyes, heavy eyes, blurred vision and/or stinging eyes. If your eyes water a lot, this can dilute the oily layer in your eyes causing them to dry out. So watery eyes can also be a sign of dry eye.
For eyes not producing enough tears, eye lubricants are available which will help your eyes. If your tears evaporate too quickly, a spray can be used to replenish the oily layer of your tears and reduce evaporation.
